Glenn Beck's 9/12 Tea Party.

September 15 2009: In a magnificent show of strength and unity the likes of which has never been seen before in this or any universe, over a million -- oops, make that tens of thousands -- of demonstrators descended upon Washington, DC, on September 12th, to deliver a message to Congress and the White House. We have studied the photos and the news coverage to decipher that message. Here's a partial chart of what it appears that they're for and/or against.

Town Hall, Summer '09

August 13 2009: It's getting ugly out there.

It was anticipated that members of Congress would hear all about health care from their constituents when they were on their August break, and I thought, "Great! People will get a chance to tell their representatives how desperately we need health care reform. A few sad stories, a few urgent questions, and bing bam boom, America can join the rest of the civilized world in making health care a human right."

Ah, but I wasn't taking into account the fear factor. Insurance companies and right-wing yakkers have ginned up real, serious, scary scary FEAR about the horrible, ridiculous idea of everyone having access to health care. It's SOCIALISM! It's NAZISM! It's -- it's ... well, it's really bad and we sure as hell don't want it.

We don't want government health care, and keep your hands off my Medicare!

It's hard to be amused at the inanity of it all. These people are genuinely frightened, and they can't even explain what is igniting their rampant fear and paranoia. I think they see a black guy in the Oval Office, and they wonder what happened to "their" America. I can certainly understand the sentiment. I felt exactly that way for eight very, very long years.

Profiles In Courage:

July 10 2009: The last big protests in Iran (18th of Tir) were ten years ago this week -- and reports filtering out through e-mails from inside the country indicate that the latest demonstrations may be even bigger. in the face of tear gas and baton-wielding police, citizens of Iran are making their feelings known. One witness wrote:

Was it a revolution still in the making? ... This was the most raucous 18th of Tir since the original one, so the regime may have been surprised its scare tactics did not completely work. One wonders how long this dance can last...

The Rat Pack Is Back!

April 2009: New President Barack Obama goes out with the boys -- from Russia, China, England, Australia, oh they had themselves a time. Their joviality looked a lot to us like Frank Sinatra's ol' Rat Pack. So we concocted this pitiful batch of poorly-doctored photos and present it with considerable pride. Ah, to be back in those heady, happy days of April 2009...
